INTRODUCTION
The Pemberton Family has a rich history in this country. For the genealogy prior to Stephen Pemberton son of Thomas and Sarah “Sally” Pemberton born in Kentucky in 1798 I have relied on other’s research. In particular I would like to thank Marty Grant and Dan Pemberton. It is very gracious of them to share their research. It had made my genealogy so much more fun and rewarding for me. So thank you so much.
Thomas and Sally Pemberton had nine children: Bennett, William, Mildred, Stephen (my 3rd great grandfather), Thomas Dryden, Nancy, Hannah, Sarah and Elizabeth.
Thomas Pemberton is listed in the 1830 Census of Adair County, Kentucky a few houses from his son Stephen Pemberton. He then died shortly thereafter in 1836 in Adair County, Kentucky. It is not know where or when Sarah died. However, it is estimated she died around 1850 also in Adair County, Kentucky.

Thomas and Sally’s children started a long tradition in the Pemberton family – marrying siblings. Four of Thomas and Sally’s children married children of John Watson Sr., a local minister. Stephen Pemberton married Nancy Ann Watson in 1819 in Adair County, Kentucky. One hundred and fifty years later in Woodinville, Washington my Mother and two of her siblings married my Father and two of his siblings – so three Pemberton’s married three DeYoung’s.
In my Grandmother’ papers there were some old pages torn from a family bible titled “A Family Record.” It states “Stephen Pemberton was born August the 27th 1798 and died January the 18th 1838” and that “Nancy Pemberton was born April the 29 in 1800 and died September the 18, 1800.” The pages then went on to list the children and their birthdays. This was my first exposure to the Pemberton family beyond my Grandfather Charles Franklin Pemberton. I have learned a lot.
