William W. VanMalsen aged 84 passed away Sunday morning at his home 10 57 Prince Street SE.

Surviving are three sons; Hans and Clarence of Gr and Rapids and Rev. Bert VanMalsen of Lansing,

Ill.; five daughters Mr s. William Avink and Mrs. John Schapperkotter of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Ha rry

Clark of Chicago, Mrs. Clarence Shipper of Lafayette, In. and Mis s Elizabeth Hazel Van Malsen at

home; one brother Peter VanMalsen; on e sister Mary Ringold, 17 grandchildren and nine

great-grandchildren . Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at t he Oakdale

Reformed Church. Rev. Harry Zegerius officiating. Interme nt Oak Hill Cemetery. Relatives will meet

in the church parlors at l:30. Arrangements by Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

(his daughter). The story made the press! Henrietta (Reka) described him as quite strict and

temperament al (she says she felt sorry for Helen – his wife). Still she also des cribed him as sweet

Obituary – Grand Rapids Herald Wednesday March 24, 1926

Mrs. William VanMalsen, aged 58 died last night at her home, 1057 Prin ce St., SE, after an illness of

more than a year. Mrs. Van Malsen came to Grand Rapids from The Netherlands, 45 years ago, and

had lived here since. Besides her husband she leaves four sons, Peter, Clarence, John and Burt, and

five daughters, Mrs. William Avink, Mrs. John Schar perkotter, Hazel, Marie and Mabel Van Malsen;

and two brothers, Burt DeJong of Grand Rapids and Minne DeJong of Kent, Wash. Funeral service s

will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the home and 2:30 at Oakdale P ark Christian Reformed Church.

Rev. J.A. Dykstra of Central Reformed Church will officiate. Interment in Oak Hill cemetery.

Bert’s first church was in Ontario, NY. They liked this church very m uch. They were there 5 years

before they went to Lucas which Reka des cribes as a big change. Very rural and the people were

much more cons ervative. After a month there, Bert was told to take a break by his D octor. People

were more demanding and stern. Bert had to get active and began to exercise. Some thought Bert

crazy to be exercising.

only 3.5 years. Some i n Lucas were angry because they were only there a short time. Reka sai d

most forgave them and even would come to visit them at their new hom e in Muskegon.

Died from a heart attack. He had just sat down in his recliner

after a walk with Grandma.
